Miscarriage and Spontaneous Abortions

Causes and why they happen

Most miscarriages that occur in the first trimester occur because of

  • Low levels of progesterone.   LPD or Luteal Phase Defect - This is where the luteal phase of your cycle is too short to sustain a pregnancy. Low progesterone levels are the number one reason for a luteal phase defect, according to statistics. If you do indeed have LPD (or suspect that you do), your doctor can do a progesterone test on you seven days after ovulation to determine exactly how deficient you are. Or you can use saliva testing, which some believe is more accurate than blood testing. If you find out that you're deficient, then you can take steps to correct your deficiency. Natural Progesterone cream is useful in lengthening the luteal phase. Use about 1 to 2 ml  of progesterone cream (Naturone) on the inner arms, inner thighs, neck, and chest area twice daily from the day after ovulation to menstruation (alternating areas of application for best results). If you find that you're pregnant, continue using the progesterone cream at the same dose until, at least, the 10th week of pregnancy.

  • Chromosomal abnormalities. These factors are out of our control. As many as 30% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, many before the woman knows she is pregnant.

  • Blighted Ovum - This is also called an "empty sac" or "non-viable" pregnancy. This is where the fertilized egg implants but does not develop. Although pregnancy symptoms can still be there, and you will have a positive pregnancy test, your pregnancy hormone (HCG) will not increase properly. Your HCG level should about double every few days early on. If it doesn't, your doctor or midwife will probably want to do an ultrasound to find out what's going on. If they don't see anything in the fetal sac, you can expect pregnancy loss is forthcoming.

  • Incompetent Cervix - This is when the cervix begins to widen and open too early in pregnancy (during the middle, usually in the second trimester). Your cervix should be closed, and your doctor or midwife will look for a closed cervix during your prenatal exams.

  • Ectopic Pregnancy - Because most ectopic pregnancies are located in one of the fallopian tubes, they are many times referred to as tubal pregnancies. However, the fertilized egg can also implant in an ovary, the cervix, or even a C-section scar. An ectopic pregnancy may feel just like a normal pregnancy early on, having some of the same common early pregnancy symptoms.

Vitamins for fertility

Vitamin supplements are necessary for increasing fertility, during pregnancy for you and your unborn child.

Most women don't get the vitamins and minerals needed from the food they eat from day to day. We would have to eat a whole lot of fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains in order to get the balance of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to thrive and be our healthiest. We all need to take a multivitamin and multimineral supplement to make up for what is lacking in the food we eat. Even the best diet in the world, these days, will not give you all the nutrients you need for your best chance at getting pregnant and bringing forth an optimally healthy child.

Women's vitamins are especially important when a woman is trying to conceive and during pregnancy. These are specifically called prenatal vitamins.

Prenatal vitamins supply a rich assortment of vitamins and minerals to help a woman conceive and bring forth a healthy baby. These vitamins and minerals are necessary to help keep our hormones balanced and our nervous system running smoothly as well as keeping all our organs functioning optimally.

So at the very least you should be on a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement with extra Folic acid and vitamin B6.  These kast two are particularly needed in to improve fertility and create the best possible environment for a healthy pregnancy.

Always go for vitamins and minerals extracted from whole organically-grown foods.  These are in the form that your body can best utilise. Synthetic vits and minerals are not bio-available to your cells, have sugar other undesirable additives such as artificial coloring.
Make sure your multivitamin has at least 400 mcg of folic acid  in order to prevent neural tube defects in your unborn baby. This neural tube develops within the first month of life, so it's important to get enough folic acid before you get pregnant.
Vitamin B6 and Fertility
Vitamin B6 is beneficial for fertility in many ways.  First, B6 helps regulate and balance hormones as well as blood sugar levels in the body.  B6 also helps prevent PMS and morning sickness.

The main fertility benefit of vitamin B6, however, is its ability to prevent and treat a luteal phase defect.   Luteal phase defect occurs when the later portion of the menstrual cycle is too short (less than 10 days long), which can prevent implantation of a fertilized egg and cause an early miscarriage.  Obviously, vitamin B6 is crucial here in order to promote fertility and conception.

It's important to have vitamin B6 in your fertility vitamins, but it is found in many foods as well, including beans, whole grains, meat, and eggs.
Remember that even the best fertility vitamin supplement won't replace eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, meats, and drinking lots of purified water. Both a healthy diet and a great prenatal vitamin supplement are needed to increase your fertility and ensure that you have a healthy pregnancy.
Good Luck, Sally

How to avoid Miscarriage

If you've had one or more miscarriage, you're most likely wanting to know how to avoid miscarriage in the future. This really depends on what caused your miscarriage and how many you have had. You may not know what caused your miscarriage, especially if it occurred early on in the pregnancy (before 12 weeks or so). Doctors generally are not concerned until a woman has had more than two consecutive miscarriages, especially if she's over age 35.

It matters very much to you, and you want to know NOW how to avoid miscarriage.

Avoiding miscarriage may not be possible if you don't know the cause of the miscarriage. If you are of "advanced maternal age" (35+), there's a good chance that your eggs are just not as healthy as they once were.

Stress, MEDICALLY is not known to cause miscarriage, unless of course you were involved in a traumatic incident such as a car accident or the victim of an abusive relationship. However, when you realize the importance of Progesterone in maintaining pregnancy you will understand that stress and pregnancy are very much involved.  Stress drains the progesterone levels leaving a deficiency which certainly may contribute to luteal phase abortions.

Certain infections can cause a miscarriage and also certain hormone imbalances. Be sure to have a full checkup done if you have had more than one miscarriage, especially if you are concerned about having another one.

If hormonal imbalances are the potential cause of your miscarriage, it is possible to correct these issues and avoid miscarriage in the future, by going on a course of natural progesterone therapy.

Other ways to help avoid miscarriage: Don't smoke. Don't drink alcohol or caffeine. Eat well and exercise moderately (don't overdo it). Strenuous exercise, especially after the first trimester is not recommended.

Herbs for fertility

If you are as healthy as possible, your chances of conceiving in any given month greatly increased.

Maca is a nutrient-dense superfood that enhances the functioning of every body system. Scientific research has proven that maca increases fertility.

Spirulina the blue-green algae is very beneficial for humans and animals (enhances fertility and beauty in bids and fish). Not only does spirulina increase fertility, but it is rich in many vitamins and minerals to improve your overall health.

Spirulina nourishes the endocrine, nervous, and immune systems, regulates metabolism, and repairs tissue. Increased fertility from spirulina is thought to be due to the high protein content, which in turn can increase the quality of your eggs.

This is particularly beneficial in those of "advanced maternal age" (as they call it), age 35+. I took spirulina during two of the months I conceived, one being the month I conceived my son.

Nettle has a long history of use as one of the best herbs for fertility. It is an excellent uterine tonic and also helps strengthen the adrenals and kidneys. This herb is packed with vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium, and chlorophyll.

Raspberry Leaf is one of the fertility herbs that is a great overall uterine tonic as well as a promoter of healthy menstruation. Raspberry leaf is rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, and iron. Raspberry leaves also contain vitamins A and B complex and many minerals, including phosphorous and potassium.

I think it is a very pleasant-tasting tea, so it is easy to drink a cup every day sweetened with honey. You can also make an infusion, which is a much more potent tea, giving you more benefit in each cup.

Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chastetree berry, chasteberry, monk's pepper, or simply vitex, is a fertility herb that is useful in treating hormonal imbalances.

Other Herbs For Infertility

Red clover:  Another excellent overall tonic herb, red clover blossoms have a very high vitamin and mineral content, which nourishes the reproductive organs as well as the entire body.  This wonderful fertility herb also helps balance hormones for a great boost in your chances of getting pregnant more quickly.

False unicorn:  An overall uterine tonic, false unicorn helps promote a healthy environment for conception.

Dong quai:  Another one of the excellent fertility herbs, dong quai specifically helps regulate hormones and tone the uterus.

Damiana:  As well as being a well-known libido booster (which is very important indeed when trying to conceive), damiana also helps to normalize hormone levels.

Evening Primrose: This beneficial herbal infertility treatment specifically helps improve cervical mucus, making it more fertile and abundant. This in turn makes the female reproductive environment more "sperm friendly." Take this fertility herb after menstrual bleeding stops up to when you know you've ovulated.
